Preheat the oven or toaster oven to 400ºF. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper; set aside.
With the tines of a fork, prick the potatoes several times. Microwave the potatoes on high for 5 to 6 minutes.
Make a large, lengthwise slit down the center of the potatoes. Sprinkle each potato with 1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder and season with salt. Press the onion slices inside, and top with the margarine. Season with additional salt to taste.
Bake on the top rack of the oven for 9 to 10 minutes, until the onion begins to brown and the potato is tender when pierced with a fork. Serve immediately.
