Ooey-gooey mozzarella sticks are hard to resist, but just four items from a restaurant portion will cost you about 420 calories. And that’s before you even start on your main meal.

Instead, enjoy this slimmed-down (and simple) version at home. Each cheesy stick is just 60 calories, so you can enjoy four of them for a reasonable 240. Pair with warm marinara sauce and dip on!

This recipe makes 16 sticks
Ingredients:

8 part-skim mozzarella string cheese sticks
½ cup whole wheat flour
4 egg whites
1 cup seasoned whole wheat breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Preparation:

Cut mozzarella string cheese sticks in half lengthwise.

Place one bowl of whole wheat flour, one bowl of beaten eggs and one bowl of whole wheat bread crumbs on the counter in that order. Mix Italian seasoning into the bread crumbs. 

Place the string cheese in flour (coating on all sides) then egg mixture, back in flour and egg mixture again, and then finish in whole bread crumbs.

Repeat with all string cheese halves. Discard remaining flour, egg whites and bread crumbs.

Liberally coat a frying pan with nonstick oil spray and warm over medium heat. 

Place 8 prepared cheese sticks in the pan, cover with a lid and cook for about 1 minute. Turn each mozzarella stick over, cover again and cook for another minute. Repeat until each side is browned and crispy, and the cheese is melty (keep a careful watch so they don’t burn)When the first batch is done, transfer them to a plate, reapply a liberal amount of nonstick oil spray to the pan and cook remaining sticks the same way. 

Serve with warm marinara sauce for dipping.
